This was a horrible cruise from the start, but I will try to be objective.I was on the Carnival Celebration cruise ship which leaves Galveston andmakes one stop in Cozumel. The Carnival staff at the Galveston port wereincredibly rude and acted as though they were doing us some big favor byletting us cruise with Carnival. I was accused of having a fake birthcertificate and pulled from line to be "interviewed". My so-called fakebirth certificate was my "original" birth certificate, which the CarnivalWebsite states they accept. The same birth certificate was used to obtainmy Texas Drivers License and a passport 15 years ago! Not sure what
Carnivalclaims is fake about it! But, there was
absolutely no reason to try andhumiliate me, which is
what the Carnival staff went out of their way to do.
Looking back, I wish I had not been allowed to board the ship - I would havehad a better time just spending the weekend in Galveston!
Once on the ship, we found our cabin, E198 at the very back of the ship. Thesize and layout of the cabin was good and worked well for the duration ofthe trip. There was food service available for lunch in the WheelhouseGrill, which was really good.
Before we could set sail, we had to go through the safety drill which wasfairly disorganized, but was over quickly. The last part of the drill, wewere sent out on the deck to find where we would be in case life boatsneeded to be lowered. The staff was barking orders to the passengers andactually yelled at us for not standing in the correct place and we were
madeto stand out in the pouring rain for about 20
minutes. I thought for amoment I had joined the Navy,
instead of being on what was supposed to be apleasure
cruise.
Due to hurricane Isidore moving into the Gulf, Carnival would not tell uswhere our port of call would be until we boarded the ship. I thought thiswas very bad of Carnival to do. They should have told us that we would besailing to Veracruz, Mexico and let people make the choice of whether to
goor not. If you ever have a chance to go to Veracruz,
pass on it!! Carnivalstates that their top executives
will periodically sail to ensure thequality of
Carnival ships and ports of call. Well, obviously theirexecutives have never been to Veracruz, or they would never divert
anothership there!
The days at sea were somewhat fun. It was overcast and cloudy most of thetrip, so the pools and the decks weren't much fun. I understand thatCarnival has no control over the weather, but again, they should havecancelled this cruise and refunded money or rescheduled passengers to
laterdates, but I think money is more important to
Carnival than whetherpassengers have a good time or
not! Our cabin was located just below thedeck where
Carnival employees take their breaks and they would drag deckchairs across the deck at all times of the night, which would wake us up
andthen it was hard to get back to sleep. When we
complained to the Pursersoffice about this, we were
told, “Deal with it!” We spent time in thecasino (I
won $100) and I had spa treatments, which were wonderful! Theshows at night were really good and we enjoyed them tremendously. The
staffin the diningrooms
and cabin stewards were really nice. But there were
several staff members who were surly and just downright rude!
Docking in Veracruz, the ship was incredibly noisy and lots of movement. Iheard some passengers say it felt as though the ship had a bent drive
shaftor broken prop. This was my first cruise, so I
don't know how a cruiseshould feel. I had been told
that ships have stabilizers, but from all the
movement, I don't think the Celebration has stabilizers. Or it might be thestorm in the Gulf was causing much of the movement, I don't know which.
Veracruz is a God-forsaken place that I hope no other cruise ship has to besubjected to. The townspeople came out to gawk at the ship and beg thepassengers for money. Trying to shop in the downtown marketplace was nextto impossible because the locals wouldn't take American money and would
nothelp us find a bank to exchange money. We finally
did stumble across a bankand the teller acted like it
was a big imposition to offer bank services. There
were locals on the beach yelling at the cruise passengers that theyhate Americans and death to America! And the beach was littered with allkinds of trash and sleeping homeless people. We gave a few pesos to somehomeless-looking boys and they promptly bought crack with it just a few
feetaway from us (and a Police Officer dressed in
fatigues, carrying a machinegun) Nice place, huh? I
bet all the Carnival Execs go to Vera Cruz on their
fun-filled vacations! Oh – Carnival does have a guarantee, but here’s thecatch – if your ship is diverted to another port, you have to make thedecision BEFORE arriving at the detoured port as to whether you want todisembark and be flown back to your port of embarkation! Without knowinganything about the alternate port Carnival dumps you at, how can one make
aninformed decision? It kind of reminds me of the old
game show “Lets make adeal”. You have to choose
what’s behind door #1 or door #2 sight-unseen!!And
Carnival claims to be reputable?
We did finally find a very nice taxi driver that took us to the Aquarium.Veracruz has a really nice Aquarium attached to a shopping mall. The
localsat this mall where much nicer, and the prices
were not as low as downtown, but I personally would
rather pay a little more and be treated in a nice
manner.
We said Adios to Veracruz at 5:00 Saturday evening. The townspeople whocame to gawk at the ship started waving white handkerchiefs as the shipleft. I'm not sure, but I think that is probably Mexican for 'please
don'tleave us behind in this God-forsaken city!'
Our air-conditioner was not working when we got back on the ship and was outfor about 5 hours. Trying to get dressed for dinner in the sweltering
heatwas next to impossible! Again, Carnival staff
acted like this was no bigdeal. Probably because the
A/C WAS working in the main lobby, where thepursers
desk is located!
Sunday night, we hit really rough seas and I literally thought theCelebration was going to find her final resting place at the bottom of
theGulf. People were being slammed side to side when
trying to make their waydown corridors and drinks
were sliding off tables. But we did make it backand I
am very glad to back on dry American soil. Carnival did not offercruise victims any type of compensation or even offer apologies!!! HeyCarnival – apologies are free and don’t cost you a dime!!! Never again
willI take another Carnival Cruise!
