My 49th birthday present was a four day cruise with my
husband, Tom. We chose RCCL on the advice of our travel agent and it was the
best move ever.
Day 1 - Boarding was easy, knowledgeable registration staff, quick picture
(which we bought) and then boarding a great ship. We were first treated to a
buffet luncheon at the Windjammer. Since we were in the off-season we splurged
on an outside cabin with a picture window! It was so neat watching the our ship
pull into port and see the other lights of cruise ships at night! The afternoon
was a pool party with the cruise director and this was just fun! Adult karaoke
in the lounge at night and then dancing to the lounge band, ITS, and then the
adult disco! It was like college years all over again!!
Day 2 - Coco Cay - They brought the cruise ship to their private island. It was
just wonderful doing nothing! I finally got a chance to read, sun bathe, tour
the island and just float in the bluest water on earth! Just chat with fellow
passengers, eat a great BBQ and relax.
We did eat in the main
dining room that night. Really great food, fun tablemates and an attentive wait
staff. Make sure you talk to Chez. She is the Discover shopping guru for Nassau.
You tell her what you want, she gives you a signed card and tells you were to
shop. My present to me was a hook bracelet and what a deal!
We spent the night at
the Johnny Thunder show. He was an original member of the Four Tops and was very
entertaining! He split the audience in half, and ran a sing-a-long contest of
all the Motown hits of the Four Tops and the Temptations! I love Motown so this
was right up my alley! Then off to the Newlywed Game and this was funny!
Day 3 - Nassau - I was hounded the minute we got off the ship by some guy who
wanted $5, $10 for a cheap necklace. Said no thanks and that was that. We stayed
away from the Straw Market, just didn't want to be hounded. I did buy my
bracelet and table linens (at the Linen Shop. She didn't push me to buy anything
and that was just fine!)
We did do the Black Beard's Cay beach excursion and this was great. More
sunbathing, drinks and chatting. We wanted to enjoy the beach because we had all
afternoon in Nassau.
Day 4 - Miami - Easy to get off the ship but our tour of South Beach was
cancelled and no one told us. I am in the process of trying to get my money back
through my travel agent. I hope the business end of RCCL is as professional as
the ship's captain, crew and staff! Anyway, $80 cab fare to Fort Lauderdale, we
made the most of the day before our night flight! We splurged and rented a
convertible car and drove all over the city! This was great!
In conclusion, your vacation is what you make of it. Buy those frozen drinks,
pre-pay your gratuities and add more for the great service you get, and eat,
drink and be merry!!!. You are on vacation and as they remind you, "You will
never see these people again so relax, have fun and remember it stays here (just
like Vegas!)".
The next problem is how to turn 50?! Have fun and I hope this helps the next
cruiser!
